PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The inability of strokes to be observed quickly enough for successful treatment was identified as a significant problem. We determined that the objective of our project would be to somehow detect strokes in a noninvasive and instant manner. Initially, we began research about stroke detection and easily-identifiable symptoms. Interested in muscle activity, we then researched electromyography (EMG) and how a threshold for muscle activity could be established. We began to construct our device, experimenting with bluetooth communication, wireless calls, and EMG readings.
INNOVATION STATEMENT
KnowStroke is a wearable stroke detection device that identifies a difference in electric potential between two arms. Comparing these EMG readings, the KnowStroke determines if one arm is inactive/flaccid and is able to send wireless emergency communications following this reading. KnowStroke is discrete, automated, and ideal for high-risk patients.
BENEFIT
Our device is wearable and minimally invasive relative to hospital stroke detection systems. The device functions hourly to pick up on stroke-like symptoms, allowing the user to be notified of their status as a stroke develops, rather than significantly after onset when severe damage has occurred.
TARGET AUDIENCE
KnowStroke is ideal for high-risk patients or individuals in nursing homes who require frequent observation. The device will not be used in place of existing stroke detection systems (e.g. MRI); if users are at high risk, the device may be able to quickly detect hemiplegia -- paralysis to one side of the body -- allowing for quicker delivery of emergency services.
